City of Encinitas

Encinitas is located in the northern portion of San Diego County, approximately 25 miles north of the City of San Diego and occupies a total area of approximately 19.57 square miles. It is bordered by six miles of coastline and bounded by two lagoons and their associated valleys to the north and south, giving the oceanfront community a wealth of natural resources. Encinitas' immediate neighbors are the City of Carlsbad to the north, City of San Marcos to the northeast, City of Solana Beach to the south, and unincorporated portions of San Diego County sitting directly east. In 2014, Encinitas' population was approximately 61,204 and year to year changes in population growth are slightly less than one percent. The city was incorporated in 1986 and is composed of five distinct communities, which are individually defined by local similarities in community design and land use character. Within the city, there are approximately 86.63 acres of open space, 143.25 acres of developed/undeveloped parks, 47.87 acres of beaches and 40.5 miles of trails. The transportation network includes the COASTER commuter train as well as four NCTD bus routes.
